World Water Day

Today is World Water Day!

The first celebrations of World Water Day began in 1992, when the UN declared it's day March 22. It grew out of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The World Water Day website  started in 2001 as a community space and repository where people cna upload their WWD event activities and reports. The theme changes every year. "The overall goal of the World Water Day 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.

The theme for 2011 is "Water for Cities." This is a particularly relevant theme in the US this year with the emergence of the hydraulic fracturing threat. Gasland did a great job of uncovering this issue. It is surprising to most that the richest nation in the world is still dealing with safe drinking water.

To see if people are already celebrating in your community, or some ideas, you can visit the Events Page of the WWD website.
